Speaking of alive. We’d guess that most of our readers remember the tear-jerker film “The Sound of Music.” When it hit the big screens, it put everyone in tears. It’s a classic. Julie Andrews was the star of the film, and rightly so: she always shines. But, did you happen to know that the home where the film was “based” is actually real and, even better, you can book it. But you’ll have to be quick, because the real family are considering closing it. von Trapp Family Lodge & Resort Not familiar with the plot? In the rolling meadows and snow-dusted peaks of Stowe, Vermont, 86-year-old Johannes von Trapp still helps run the lodge his mother, Maria von Trapp, founded 75 years ago after the family fled Nazi-occupied Salzburg.

The Sound of Music tells the story of Maria, a spirited young postulant in 1930s Austria, who is sent to be the governess for the seven children of a widowed naval Captain, Georg von Trapp. Maria brings joy and music back into the strict, militaristic household, which leads to her falling in love with the Captain. Their romance blossoms, but their happiness is overshadowed by the rise of the Nazis in Austria, which forces the family to flee their home for safety. My family and I bawled our way through the film all of those years ago. It certainly was a tear-jerker.
