The 5 Pence Toll Bridge

When the topic is Europe (including the UK) you never run out of things to say, see or do, really. A marvelous aspect of this wide, immense and thrilling chunk of earth is that you can spend years crossing from one side to another, up and down, hither and yon, and will still only scratch the surface. No surprise, as Europe is home to ancient ruins, medieval castles, Renaissance art, and significant historical landmarks.

From the Colosseum in Rome to the Acropolis in Athens, there’s a wealth of history to explore. Most of us have been there, done that. Funnily, it’s not all Vikings and Game of Thrones: Europe also has many unusual museums like the Museum of Broken Relationships in Croatia, the Sewer Museum in Paris, and the Icelandic Phallological Museum. Put them all on your list.

But, in this post, set in the UK, we feature a video that highlights how history touches its people everyday, and in so many subtle ways that they never really even find the need to ponder it, unless they actually stop and think critically about what they’re doing or seeing. This is such a case and, as you might expect from us, it’s quite funny.

Here, it’s about wee crossing over the River Thames that is tiny, located in a place tucked away from the world, but still has a toll for a bridge that probably doesn’t even need to exist anymore. It’s a funny tale, with more hooks, nooks and crannies than you might expect. Paul and Rebecca Whitewick take us on this quirky journey: The 5 pence Toll Bridge – That doesn’t add up! (PS – you can visit as well.) NOTE: make sure you have a 5p coin! (although 5p coins are legal tender up to the sum of £5 when offered in repayment of a debt; however, the coin’s legal tender status is not normally relevant for everyday transactions.) Take a credit card, too: this isn’t the dark ages, after all!

As the old English saying goes, there's nowt as queer as folk.
