Some people call me Maurice

‘ Cause I speak of the pompatus of love. But what does that even mean? Could it actually mean the Porís de Candelaria? Wouldn’t that be a nice coincidence? We’re willing to bet that we’ve confused you even more, the more we talk about this. One, of course, is a song by American singer Steve Miller. The other is a rather unique and special location in Spain, one that you’re very likely to miss.

I’ll bet whatever you want that not many people know of a place where you can literally find a village inside a cave, and if that wasn’t enough, with sea views. This really was a discovery, a surprising and incredible one at that and it is most definitely a place to visit if you are in the region. Add it to your list as you will not be disappointed.

You don’t have to travel very far if you are already in the Canary Islands because this remarkable place can be found on the island of La Palma. Tucked into a large cave, on an impressive cliff, we can find a small village that seems to be taken from an adventure novel. The village is called Porís de Candelaria and it is located in the most western part of the island built upon the oldest rock formations of lava on La Palma which combined with a backdrop of almost vertical cliffs make for a spectacular sight.

.

Porís de Candelaria is one of the most magical and personal corners of La Palma. Hidden in the municipality of Tijarafe, it is a small fishing village that rises inside a natural cave about 50 meters high. Its characteristic white houses were built by the locals, who were searching for a respite from the oppressive summer heat. Today it is still inhabited by families who make it their second home, seeking to connect with the sea and getting away from the stress of everyday life. There is no internet, no restaurants and not even trash cans. This secluded spot can be reached on foot – about 10 kilometers round trip – by boat or by car (there is a parking lot just minutes away). Read more here courtesy of the always fun EyeOnSpain.com
