So alert it hurts.

We leap, once again, into our periodic series of posts that are most definitely for those who like to travel until it hurts. The pain, either real or imagined, is real to the subject. Why, you may ask? There are only so many times that you can visit the Eifel tower before you drift off into a narcoleptic stupor. Luckily, the planet is big enough (almost) to support us all – at least for now – so the heat is off for the time being. That means that we can still be all that we can be, wherever.

As part of our Want Obscure? series, let us encourage you to be Alert, and introduce you to visit Alert. The Nunavut, northernmost permanently inhabited place in the world, located just 817 km (508 miles) from the North Pole. It’s primarily a Canadian military signals intelligence station and weather station. Tourist access is virtually non-existent, but it epitomizes extreme isolation and Arctic conditions. Alert, in the Qikiqtaaluk Region of Nunavut, Canada, is the northernmost continuously inhabited place in the world. The location is on Ellesmere Island. If you think that Toronto is terrifying in the winter, that’s nothing. What to you think? Don’t forget to write.
