Maybe it was the weather – October 2023. Maybe we were tired. Who knows? At the end of the day, we were glad we went, especially now that Iceland’s Terra Firma is waking up.
Up until recently, we were one of those in the long line of people who said that “I must visit Reykjavik.” For us, anyway, the city and Iceland itself held a somewhat opaque image in our minds. We knew that it was a location to see – everyone told us so – and we were excited to actually make it happen. So, finally, we did, this past year. Once we had arrived, though, it was rather different than we expected. Sure, it was as grey and stoic as the images might have portrayed, so that was no surprise. Having traveled through Scandinavia many times over the years, it struck us as being somewhat of a “knock-off” of places like Stockholm or Copenhagen or Oslo, but on a more subdued level. Again, that would be the “Scandic” influence and bloodlines calling out.
We were somewhat surprised at Reykjavik itself, though. It was less buzzy than we thought. Perhaps we didn’t see places that were more to our middle-aged tastes, but there seemed to be little to offer other than the frankly spine-tingling rivers, waterfalls and natural creations of Mother Nature (MUST SEE.) Maybe we were just tired.
If you haven’t been to Reykjavik, it is a place of its own. Watch the video above: see if you agree. Remember that Reykjavik is a gateway to the incredible natural wonders of Iceland, so without a doubt, explore the nearby landscapes, waterfalls, geysers, and glaciers if you have the time.
