Saab story

This post may be somewhat specific – it’s about Saab automobiles, so look away if you have no interest in that.  But there is a reason why we’re writing this.

However, if you do have an affection for the brand, your love of Saab is probably a long, happy and sad story.  Created and manufactured in Sweden, Saab was bounced around from one major auto manufacturer to another, until General Motors finally put a stake in its heart in 2011.

But, here are just a few of Saab firsts that we all take for granted now:

  • 1953 Preheating of the induction air, to prevent icing in the carburettor, is introduced in December on the 1954 models.
  • 1958 The GT 750 is Saab’s first model to have factory fitted seat belts.
  • 1960 Ventilation system of through-flow type with effective extraction behind the side windows.
  • 1961 An air “slicer”, intended to keep the rear window clear, is introduced on the Saab 95 in March.
  • 1962 From January, all cars for Sweden are fitted with seat belts in front.
  • 1963 Diagonally divided brake system with double brake circuits on all Saabs of 1964 models.
  •

And, they are known to travel hundreds of thousands of miles / KMs before they finally give up the ghost.

And if you’re clever, you will see them appearing in films, TV and Netflix regularly.

But, to the point:  if you’re a fan or – even not – or find yourself in Sweden, do yourself a favour and visit the Saab museum.  Our pals Tripadvisor can get you there.  See below.
