Puente “No-way-vo”

History stays with us for a reason. Could be good, could be bad. Could be both. This post is, no surprise, about the good. In Spain’s Ronda province sits a rather wonderful, rather gob-smacking place with a rather breathtaking feature, and it’s a natural feature, to boot. You might have seen pictures. You may even have been fortunate enough to pass your or your legs or your auto over it. It’s the Ronda Puente Nuevo and it was constructed in 1793. It is still in use, but be aware if you’re headed out that way, be aware that closed to all traffic except for residents with cars that are registered in Ronda. The scheme will start in 2025.

The bridge spans a deep gorge, creating a dramatic and awe-inspiring vista. The bridge’s design itself is impressive, with its sturdy arches and elegant lines. Car, or no car (by foot) it’s nothing short of spectacular, given its age and the role that it has played for over 200 years. It’s a must-see when you’re in Spain.

The Ayuntamiento de Ronda, the Town Council, which is led by PP’s Mari-Paz Fernandez, the mayor, plans to restrict use of the Puente Nuevo only to people whose cars are registered in Ronda. This was announced after the monthly plenary council meeting on Monday. The scheme will start in 2025.
