Writing about Russia can be a bit of a Yin and Yang experience nowadays, with most of the “superpowers” deciding that this is a good time to rattle their sabres and, in the process, rattle the rest of the bones of the rest of the planet. Russia is one of those countries.
Honestly, there is never a good time to rattle anything: there are lives at stake. For the sake of this post and the idea to focus on the good, we’ll ignore the warlords and enlighten ourselves with Russia the good. We are copying some of the text word for word (in English) from the article in the hopes that more world-aware travelers can get see that there is still life in Russia and, thus, should get planning.
A walk around any more or less large city always involves turning to its history: what events led to it looking the way it does today. And most often, cities owe their appearance to various political, economic and social circumstances.
But with Nizhny Novgorod, everything is more interesting. Yes, its development was influenced by its appointment as the center of the province, and the transfer of the Makaryev Fair here, and the holding of the All-Russian Exhibition of 1896, and the evacuation of institutions and large industries here during the wars.
