Mysterious Ohio

We have written a few posts in the past about the US state of Ohio. We lived there at one time. It’s a pleasant enough place, with Cleveland, Cincinnati and Dayton as its main population centres. The Rock and Roll Hall of Fame is there. It is mostly comprised of cows and rolling fields.

But, one thing about Ohio is that it once was the home of a mysterious civilisation that left no written records. In the middle of the state, in a rather unassuming place sit a number of unusual mounds that have been there for millennia, but to this day, no-one knows for sure what they are and why they’re there. They are known as the Hopewell Mounds (correctly pronounced wop-well) and were constructed  as many as 2,000 years ago, now known as The Octagon, part of the Hopewell Ceremonial Earthworks. Indigenous people –   the Hopewell Culture, a network of Native American societies that gathered from as far away as Montana and the Gulf of Mexico between roughly 100 BCE and 500 CE and were connected by a series of trade routes would come to The Octagon from hundreds of miles away, gathering regularly for shared rituals and worship.

Much of Ohio is farmland. One can only imagine what might be hidden underground.
