Being accepted into UNESCO is quite the honor; it doesn’t happen to everyone who applies, and there are stringent standards that each acceptee must obey. According to its website, UNESCO’s mission is to contribute to the building of a culture of peace, the eradication of poverty, sustainable development and intercultural dialogue through education, the sciences, culture, communication and information. The group’s mission is to contribute to the building of a culture of peace, the eradication of poverty, sustainable development and intercultural dialogue through education, the sciences, culture, communication and information. But, one of its most important and visible efforts are the ways in which the organization funds worthy not only activities, but also culturally important buildings and edifices as well. And in this post, we’d like to highlight one of those treasures, the Palau de la Música Catalana.
Palau de la Música Catalana (Catalan pronunciation: [pəˈlaw ðə lə ˈmuzikə kətəˈlanə], English: Palace of Catalan Music) is a concert hall in Barcelona, Catalonia, Spain. Designed in the Catalan modernista style by the architect Lluís Domènech i Montaner, it was built between 1905 and 1908 for Orfeó Català, a choral society founded in 1891 that was a leading force in the Catalan cultural movement that came to be known as the Renaixença (Catalan Rebirth). It was inaugurated on 9 February 1908. Wikipedia has a splendid summary of the building and its history here. If you find yourself in Barcelona, be sure to put time aside to bask in the sheer excellence and beauty.
