We’re not too young here at Matouring, so we remember things. Back in the 1970’s, the “earth” movement really took hold. Healthy food, lifestyle and clean thoughts were at the top of the list for most “aware” folks back then. Out of that heady period came a genuine interest in making the world a better place to live. Organic, Saabs instead of Cadillacs, letting your hair grow naturally wherever it appeared. We could look back at that thoughtful time and learn something, even now.
But, we don’t have to look too far, as one of the stalwarts from that time is still alive and kicking. You might remember the Moosewood Restaurant and its offshoot cookbooks.
For nearly 50 years Moosewood cookbooks have served as the global guide to vegetable-forward eating, introducing generations to a vegetarian gastronomy that includes fish and seafood. With 5 million cookbooks sold, Moosewood has created a culinary movement and changed the way we think about vegetables.
Next time you’re in New York State (Ithaca, to be precise,) do yourself (and your body) a favour and visit this venerable and still very relevant place. Your tummy will smile.
