Modesty Blaise.

Take a little trip through time with us in this post, if you will. There are some of us still alive and kicking who lived in and through the 1960s: your editor and his better half, for example. From what memories that we can still muster and those that we can visibly see, thanks to imagery of the time, it was a wild ride.

That era was definitely a period of intense change and cultural transformation, which is a significant part of why they’re often remembered as “cool.” The decade saw a significant shift in social norms, with the rise of the counterculture movement. This period of time set the template of what “free living” meant.

It was a slice in time that challenged traditional values and emphasized individuality, freedom, and self-expression. The 1960s witnessed an explosion of musical creativity, with the rise of rock and roll, the British Invasion, and the emergence of genres like soul and psychedelic rock. And  a healthy mix of all of the above.

Artists like The Beatles, The Rolling Stones, Jimi Hendrix, and Aretha Franklin redefined popular music. It was all heady stuff. Certainly not like today. On a more positive note, though – some youth of today are discovering the cool 60s again. It’s a treasure trove of goodies that we’re likely never to see again.

Technological advancements in television and media helped to spread these cultural and political movements. The world was getting bigger and smaller thanks to better jets, cars, hotels and the whole world rising to new levels of equality.

Watch the video above, featuring the epitome of the young sixties “go girl” female, Monica Vitti. You’ll even see a mention for Hertz Rent-a-Car. Who knew that the company even existed back then, let alone in places other than the USA?

We may not ever be able to go back as it were during those wild times, but we can look back and look forward simultaneously, especially thanks to the internet. Thank you, internet. Enjoy the video above.

Speaking of history, you can enjoy some by staying in the lovely British village of Ashtead. Wander through the plush forest and fields. There are even Roman ruins up in the gentle hills. You’re a short walk to the rail station to London or the south & M25 Motorway. Click here

You’ll probably want a car to tootle around Ashtead and environs. We have one for you. To book, click here.
