Another rail post, but of a different timbre this time: these posts seem to be coming fast and furious now that the planet is making it quite clear that we dim humans are missing the plot. Recent climate data shows that global warming is accelerating at an unprecedented rate, with human activities identified as the unequivocal cause. If you don’t physically feel the changes now, you will soon. This is real.
Temperature: 2024 was the warmest year on record, with the global average temperature reaching approximately 1.55°C (2.8°F) above the 1850-1900 pre-industrial average. This marks the first calendar year to exceed the crucial 1.5°C threshold that nations aim to limit warming below. The last decade (2015-2024) has been the warmest on record. Carbon Dioxide (CO₂) Levels: Atmospheric CO₂ concentrations are at their highest in at least 800,000 years. As of early September 2025, the daily average CO₂ concentration is 424.80 ppm (parts per million). This is over 50% higher than the pre-industrial level of about 280 ppm. The list is as long as your arm. Obviously, some (too many) countries are not paying attention. Ultimately, they too will be the ones to pay. Happily, though, some countries are rising to the occasion, and it might surprise you who.

Take a look at Kuala Lumpur. They already have an electric tram that will serve the country’s train service. Kuala Lumpur, as the capital of Malaysia, is taking significant action to address global warming, with a major focus on its public rail transport system. The city recognizes that the transport sector, particularly the high usage of private vehicles, is a major contributor to its greenhouse gas emissions.
Mass Rapid Transit (MRT) and Light Rail Transit (LRT) Systems: The city is committed to expanding its MRT and LRT lines. These systems are seen as a key strategy to reduce traffic congestion and the associated carbon emissions. A study estimated that the implementation of just two MRT lines could lead to a reduction of nearly 200,000 tonnes of CO₂ equivalent from traffic emissions.

Malaysia has always been big on rail to get its residents where they want to go, but this news is big!
