Mad about Madeira

This could end up being your next new favorite holiday destination: Madeira.  Firstly, to set the stage, Madeira is an archipelago situated in the North Atlantic Ocean, in the region of Macaronesia, just under 400 kilometres (250 mi) north of the Canary Islands.

Madeira is indeed an unusual and captivating destination. This volcanic archipelago boasts lush subtropical landscapes, dramatic cliffs, and fertile valleys, creating a unique microclimate. The island’s unique ecosystem supports a diverse range of flora and fauna, including the Laurissilva Forest, a UNESCO World Heritage Site.

It’s also famous for its intricate network of “levadas,” irrigation channels that traverse the island’s mountains. Hiking along these levadas offers stunning views and a unique way to experience the island’s natural beauty.

Another favourite of the island is the Pico do Arieiro & Pico Ruivo: Hike or take a scenic drive to these peaks for breathtaking panoramic views of the island. And, finally, don’t miss visiting the charming capital city, Funchal, with its historic center, botanical gardens, and cable car rides.
