Let’s have a moment of silence and condolences for those hearty entrepreneurs who took the risk and, eventually, took it on the chin. There will be no laughter and pointing fingers here in this post. Where would we be if those enterprising individuals never made the leap? There are so many examples of this that we almost take it for granted. But, today we’re highlighting one of the most grand examples of all. The Kangbashi District is an urban area located in Ordos City, Inner Mongolia Autonomous Region, China. It gained international attention for being an example of a largely vacant “ghost city” with extravagant infrastructure and buildings but a low population.
Despite its low population, Kangbashi still has some functioning facilities and a small number of residents. There are modern office buildings, government offices, schools, parks, and other amenities. Efforts have been made to attract businesses and residents to the district, but the progress has been slow.
This may look like a disappointing result for those who took a bath here, but it certainly is an opportunity for explorers like us to go see, up close and personal as they say, this most amazing historical relic. Kangbashi District serves as a notable example of the challenges associated with urban planning and development in China. It has become a subject of study for urban planners, economists, and researchers interested in understanding the complexities of urbanization and the impact of economic factors on urban growth.
