Isn’t it a downright pleasure to be able to travel, and to be liquid enough to skip the “usual suspects” and, instead, dive into a place where, when mentioned, will make 87% of your friends and family scratch there heads and mutter “where’s that?” with all one-uppishness not being a factor? These places are rare jewels, as the world’s voracious consumption of travel destinations – old or new – are sometimes slowly, sometimes with gusto transformed into “must see” endeavors. Next thing you know – “hey presto” everyone is there and soon your toes are being trampled by the Hoi Poloi at every turn.
Well, if you’re a fan of Europe and its wider reaches, then why not “go rogue,” skip the everyday and spend your time in Lake Ohrid. Or, specifically, East Ohrid. East Lake Ohrid, located on the border between North Macedonia and Albania, is an enlightening destination for a number of reasons.
Firstly, and this will make you feel good about sensible traveling, is that Lake Ohrid is one of the oldest and deepest lakes in Europe, estimated to be around 1.36 million years old. This ancient body of water is a UNESCO World Heritage site, recognized for its unique ecosystem and historical significance. You’ll feel like a babe in arms, knowing that information.
The lake and its surroundings have a rich history, with evidence of human settlements dating back to prehistoric times. The city of Ohrid, often referred to as the “Jerusalem of the Balkans,” is home to a bevy of medieval churches, monasteries, and archaeological sites. And, finally, the town of Ohrid, located on the northeastern shore of the lake, is a true cultural gem. It boasts well-preserved Byzantine architecture, ancient churches like St. John at Kaneo, and the Ohrid Fortress, which offers stunning views of the lake.
