As you may know, we are unabashedly rail fans. Taking the train is far superior to being squashed between seats on a jet. Sure, rail takes longer than the jet, but think of what you’ll see as you course through the mountains or across the parched deserts. Also, trains come in all shapes and sizes, from the most rustic in Chile all the way to the “no expense spared” Orient Express. And, of course, the biggest plus of rail is being able to watch the countryside go by as the rails click clack along the way. Better for the environment, too.
If you’ve gotten this far, you might have a vision of what the trains might be like. The obvious impression is a huge engine, belching out smoke and making a huge racket as it goes. That’s one picture. But did you know that many countries have much smaller trains that completely changes the picture.
There are many, and they’re easier to find than you might think. Even better, they tend to be smaller in size and wind their way through some of the most picturesque locations on the planet. Our affiliate friends Travelsphere have a real joy of an adventure with their Yellow Trains of the Pyrenees.
Take unforgettable journeys by train through the Pyrenees dividing Spain and France, starting on the Trenet de Cadaques road train and travelling through Roses to the dramatic landscapes of Cap de Creus National Park. Next, head to France, where your explorations begin in the medieval walled city of Thuir, famed for its vineyards and the Byrrh Caves. You’ll then board the Yellow Train for a journey through the Pyrenees for wonderful views.
Moving into Spain, you’ll enjoy another fantastic trip, this time on an electric cog train which takes you into the lush green Núria Valley. You’ll then enjoy a journey on the Red Train from Rivesaltes to Axat before making more discoveries in the delightful town of Figueres, the birthplace of Salvador Dali. Interested?
