Over the past decade or so, divine winds – or perhaps just better travel options – have made travel a more inclusive and reachable thing. We regularly see “alarming, don’t visit here!” videos until we’re blue in the face, and posts on social media sites about how Venice or Paris, Machu Picchu or even sites as common as Miami have become inundated with armies of newbie sight-seers. On the plus side of the discussion, though, we’re thrilled that the world is getting a chance to discover the world.
The minus side is that this endless parade of visitors who don’t really know why they’re there and, even with the best intentions, can turn travel into a nightmare, of sorts. It’s something that we’ll all need to keep our eyes open to monitor if we all can collectively maintain some semblance of order, so that not only that “we” – the collective “we” – will have places to go without regret or shame.
Now then . . . not trying to be snooty or uppity here, we’d like to introduce you to a place that is very much new to us and is a hidden treasure, of sorts. Calm, relaxed, contemplative, it’s in an attainable location and it’s where you will find yourself with similar-minded travelers, not the hoards. Here, we’re focusing on Lambaesis (also known as Timgad.) Located in Algeria, it is a well-preserved Roman military fortress and archaeological site. It offers an almost singular and untouched glimpse into the Roman Empire’s presence in North Africa.
It was once a major military outpost and administrative center during the Roman era. Emperor Hadrian used it regularly. Even now, it provides valuable insights into the Roman military, society, and culture in North Africa. And it is in pristine condition due to its relative obscurity. It offers a chance to immerse yourself in the rich cultural heritage of Algeria and learn about the country’s Roman past without the hoards.
To get there, first fly into Batna (BLJ) Airport (click here) and then bus is probably best. Purchase Tickets: Look for bus terminals or stations in your starting city. You can often buy tickets directly at the station or through online platforms.
