It is one of the Twelve Jyotirlingas: It is one of the twelve Jyotirlingas (Jyotirlingams) or “lingams of light” in India, which are considered the most sacred abodes of Lord Shiva. According to Hindu mythology, these are places where Shiva manifested as an infinite column of light, demonstrating his supremacy. The Kashi Vishwanath Jyotirlinga is believed to be the first to manifest.

The temple’s location in Varanasi is crucial. Varanasi is often called the “Spiritual Capital of India” and is considered one of the oldest continuously inhabited cities in the world. It holds immense spiritual significance for Hindus, who believe that: Dying in Varanasi grants moksha (liberation from the cycle of rebirth). Bathing in the holy River Ganga (which flows past Varanasi) cleanses sins. Lord Shiva himself whispers the Taraka Mantra into the ears of those who die in Kashi, ensuring their salvation.
