It’s nice to be important . . . .

. . . but it’s important to be nice. Firstly, let me say in advance that this post is, indeed, about modern travel. It’s also about history. But, most of all, it’s about being a good human being, as you’ll see.

Our affiliate partners, OMIO continue to go from strength to strength with their ever-changing catalogue of useful and easy to use travel products. We feature them regularly, because they just get better and better. Whether its rail, flights, buses and more, you can count on a good and sensibly-priced product.

OMIO’s latest offering is travel via ferries. As luxurious as any mode of travel, ferries should be on your list of travel options. Why is that? Europe does indeed have a particularly robust and heavily utilized ferry network compared to many other parts of the world. Several factors contribute to this: Geography: A Continent of Peninsulas, Islands, and Inland Waterways.

Islands Galore: Europe is surrounded by major seas (Mediterranean, Baltic, North Sea, Atlantic) and contains thousands of islands (e.g., Greek Islands, Balearic Islands, Italian islands like Sicily and Sardinia, UK and Irish Isles, Scandinavian archipelagos). Ferries are often the most practical, if not the only, way to reach these islands with a vehicle or large amounts of luggage. It’s slow travel for sure, but maybe that’s just what you want. Recently, OMIO have joined ranks with European Ferry company, Stena and they, too, have relaxing ferry options for you. Want to learn more? Click here.

If we may, we want to also throw in little examples of history, humanity and good nature. When I was on my way to Sweden for a business meeting in the 1990s, I opted for a nice restaurant to complete the day and the trip. A mature couple looked over at me and asked if I was alone. Next thing I knew, they pulled a chair up for me and we proceeded to have a unforgettable evening. They even paid my meal. It was a delightful. It was only some years later that I realised that I had been having dinner with John Stena and his wife, Birgit Andersson. Rich with discussion and laughter, it was utterly something that I can still recall to this day. Thank you both. May you still be loving life together, wherever you are.

This is me on the train back to London after a delightful evening. Thank you both, wherever you are. Omio now has Stena line. Relax and enjoy yourself. Take in the breeze. Take the Stena Line.
