If you’re not familiar with this story, prepare to be amazedKowloon Walled City was an ungoverned and densely populated de jure Chinese enclave within the boundaries of Kowloon City, British Hong Kong.

Originally a Chinese military fort, the walled city became an enclave after the New Territories were leased to the United Kingdom by China in 1898. 

50,000 souls lived in only 500 apartments under shocking conditions.

Compare it now to modern Hong Kong, you may have trouble believing that it’s the same place.

Kowloon Walled City hasn’t been forgotten, and you can visit the site.
