Space, the final frontier. Or at least that’s what we thought at the time. (We’ve gone much further.) For many of us, the 1950’s were a rather spectacular decade, some good, some bad. For example the post-World War II boom, the dawn of the Cold War and the civil rights movement in the United States. The DNA Double Helix was discovered. The Hungarian Uprising. Sputnik was launched, and the space age that Sputnik inspired. The world was bathed in the symbolism that that New Age promised.
Luckily for us, much of the good elements still exist for us to enjoy. And, one of the best is one that we can actually visit and experience first hand: Atomium, a landmark modernist building in Brussels, Belgium, originally constructed as the centrepiece of the 1958 Brussels World’s Fair. There are few places on earth that can boast the history, and the authenticity of this fun landmark. But what IS the Atomium? And what enigmas are associated with the structure? Come and find out!
