Igloo or Ugloo?

You may have already surmised the outcome of the subject of this post, but you can’t help but stand back and admire the sheer chutzpah. How many of us would have the backbone to build a humongous dome in the middle of “nowhere, Alaska”? Not many of us. And, after the first hurdle, how many would continue on this quest when there was one roadblock (literally and figuratively) after another to achieve the goal?

As Khalil Gibran once said, yesterday is but today’s memory, and tomorrow is today’s dream. Or not.

Very few, to say the least. As of just a few weeks ago (this post is from December, 2024) another heroic attempt at conquering the bleak Alaska tundra and turning it into a viable and desirable resort was still standing. The owner had high hopes. But as you’ll see in the video, sometimes dreams don’t last.

Still, imagine if it was still viable. Welcome to Igloo City, an architectural enigma that stands as a testament to human ambition and nature’s reclaiming power. As seasoned Alaskan travel enthusiasts, we bring you an insider’s guide to this abandoned yet fascinating igloo-shaped hotel.

Here, we delve into its history and current state and provide valuable travel tips for those adventurous enough to explore this unusual landmark. Read more here courtesy of Alaska Itinerary. (As of this posting Igloo City is closed.) But who knows? It may rise again.

You’ve got to be of a certain kind to take this on. We’re behind you, all along the way.

You may not make it all the way to The Igloo. But it can be even better: Click here for Aurora Viewing Deck and Peaceful Retreat. As Khalil Gibran once said, yesterday is but today’s memory, and tomorrow is today’s dream. Or not.
