. . . .to drink here? In every country, especially the olde worlde ones, there will always be one or more enterprising characters who will “big up” what they have to offer. Under the microscope, these “features” could be The Real Thing, or simply some pale attempt at sucking in the tourists. Pubs are usually a ripe haunt for those who either can’t tell the difference between “real” or Olde worlde “wannabes.”
Relaxing in bed last night, a post popped up from Wikipedia about a place called Sean’s Bar. Could this be the real thing? Sean’s Bar is a pub in Athlone, Ireland, notable for its reputed establishment in AD 900 and claim to being the oldest extant bar in both Ireland and Europe. Other architectural and archaeological records, including the Record of Monuments and Places and the National Inventory of Architectural Heritage, date the building to the 17th or 18th century, which, of course, is still pretty darned old.
Now, if you’re a sleuth, you’ll notice that there is a rather big gap between AD 900 and 1725. So what gives? Who should you believe, or should you just trust the hearty and scrumptious pints of ale that they pull, or the tales they pull as well? One thing is for sure. There is no messing about in Ireland when it comes to Guinness. We stand by that ethos, too.
If you find yourself needing a pint or are stumbling around with your mates, know that Sean’s Bar is located on Main Street, Athlone, on the West Bank (Co. Roscommon) of the River Shannon, and was originally known as Luain’s Inn. It is often colloquially referred to simply as Sean’s. Stop by, You’re in for a treat.
