Indulge us here if you will, as we take somewhat of a twisty tale to get to what we think might be somewhat appealing to many of our audience. A few years back, as Britain was riding high when it came to film and television, people like Emma Thompson, Bill Nighy and Hugh Grant were at the top of the charts. Their stars shone brightly, as they brought a bit of je ne sais quoi to the rest of us wannabes. Clever, funny, worldly, cheeky and laugh out loud all at once. Those days have drifted away somewhat. Tastes change, as do the actors.

The reason why we bring this up is that one of the shining stars of that moment was a film called Love Actually. The story goes that the origin of the name is still a bit fuzzy, but allegedly, Alec Guiness once made a comment about the seaside city of Hove, UK where he visited often and remarked that he enjoyed it. Subsequently, ever since Sir Alec anointed the city, it has become an erstwhile little brother to Brighton. Back then, to be somebody, you needed to live in Brighton. That’s still the case, but Hove is now also a “destination” where you should spend some time, too. It’s artsy and relaxing. And the sea is mere moments away. A stone’s throw, almost.

Hove is renowned for its stunning and well-preserved Regency architecture, particularly along the seafront with grand squares like Brunswick Square and Adelaide Crescent, as well as the beautiful cream-colored buildings lining the streets. The image above is the train station.
This all gives the town a sophisticated and aesthetically pleasing feel. To be transparent, our son lives there, and so we have first-hand experience about the place. And, it also has one of the most beautiful, and less busy train stations in the UK. If you like the sea, brisk walks and hip places to eat, drink and be merry, why not give Hove a chance?

When we’re there, we sometimes give “the kids, now well into their twenties” a break and stay at the Best Western Princes Marine Hotel. Click here to book. A short walk from the seaside, with him bakeries, pubs and activities, you’ll revel in the hip coolness.
The Best Western Princes Marine Hotel is situated on Hove seafront opposite Hove lawns and the English Channel. We’ve stayed there and it is a hidden gem.
There is limited private parking, free fibre optic WiFi and a 24-hour front desk. Best Western Princes Marine is a 25-minute stroll along the seafront from Brighton’s vibrant centre. The famous Brighton Pier is 2 miles away, and Hove Lagoon is just half a mile away. We love it. You will too. Click here
