As always, hope springs eternal. Mankind will always correct its errant ways and will always achieve its highest aspiratiions. And, humans keep trying to make that so.
In 1900, Ida Hofmann, a German pianist, and her companion Henry Oedenkoven, the 25-year-old son of a businessman from Antwerp, purchased a hill in Ascona which had been known as “Monescia” and established the “Co-operative vegetarian colony Monte Verità“.
The colony was established first on principles of primitive socialism, but later championed an individualistic vegetarianism and hosted the Monte Verità Sanatorium, a sun-bathing establishment.[3] It has been cited as an example of “light asceticism” which arose during the Belle Epoque, inspired by Tolstoyan values.[4]
The co-operative is long-gone, but the idealism and the location still exist. You can experience a similar, but different kind of joy.
