Holy Roller *

Holy Roller . . . . coaster!

Well, you love ’em, or you hate ’em. Roller coasters are easily one of the most polarising activities created by humans. We love them. Just make sure you empty your pockets before the first roll. As Gemini cleverly commented, “Roller coasters evoke strong reactions in people.” That’s an understatement.

However, many more people enjoy the intense physical sensations like speed, G-forces, weightlessness (airtime), and the feeling of controlled danger. This triggers the release of adrenaline, which can be euphoric for some. Oh, really?

As it happens, (in Vancouver, British Columbia, where we are located,) we have a dandy roller coaster that is the envy of coaster freaks around the world. One huge draw is that it is wooden, the Valhalla of roller coasters. So, the next time you’re here, queue up and buy yourself ticket.

Did you know that there are roller coaster clubs all around the world? These clubs are for enthusiasts who share a passion for riding roller coasters and visiting amusement parks. They often organize events, trips, and offer various benefits to their members.

In the USA, there is American Coaster Enthusiasts (ACE): Founded in 1978, ACE is the largest and longest-running roller coaster enthusiast organization in the world, with members worldwide. They organize numerous events, publish a magazine and newsletter, and advocate for the preservation of roller coasters.

Europe won’t be left out. European Coaster Club (ECC): Formed in 1996, the ECC is a not-for-profit organization with over 2,300 members from around the globe. They focus on the enjoyment of roller coasters and amusement parks, organizing trips and publishing a magazine called “First Drop.”

And, for we Brits, it’s a pilgrimage. Roller Coaster Club of Great Britain (RCCGB): This is a social club that unites roller coaster enthusiasts from all over the world. They have over 1,000 members from 15 different countries and organize events for members to meet and ride together. * Holy Roller . . . . coaster!
