Groningen, then?

Are we going again, or are we just groaning (with the puns?) Many years ago, your editor was in tech, but also into music, so much so that we (my band) were able to complete two tours of Europe, as well as sold-out tours in the UK. It was a dream come true for me, even having British parents. We even toured with PIXIES and featured in a BBC Radio 2 John Peel session (available on You Tube.) Heady times, for sure and the impetus enough to make me eventually move to the UK. Good times, as they like to say. The European tours covered a number of venues and locations, but one that really struck us (me especially) was Groningen in The Netherlands. Relaxed, happy people. Incredible beers and ales, and superlative food. And the history!

We highly recommend it, especially if it’s your first foray into Europe. Groningen is a vibrant Young City with a Historic Heart: Groningen is a paradox in the best way possible. It’s one of the oldest cities in the Netherlands, with settlements dating back to 300 BC and city rights granted in the 11th century. Yet, it boasts a youthful and energetic vibe thanks to its large student population (around a quarter of its inhabitants!). This creates a dynamic atmosphere where centuries-old courtyards and buildings sit alongside lively student hotspots and modern architecture like the striking Forum Groningen.
