Exploring Belgrade’s Creepy Railway

All aboard the Not Creepy, just “previously enjoyed BGVoz Suburban Train System. At least It has one and it works! Did you know that Malta, San Marino and Iceland don’t have rail at all. Take that!

For a rail fan, Belgrade’s rail service is interesting because it represents a fascinating mix of old and new infrastructure, from its Soviet-era commuter trains to ambitious, high-speed modernization projects. This creates a compelling contrast that is rare to find elsewhere.

Soviet-Era Rolling Stock: Belgrade’s BGVoz suburban rail system runs on Soviet-designed ŽS Class 412 EMUs. These trains, built in the 1980s, are rickety, dimly lit, and covered in graffiti. While far from modern standards, their raw, industrial character offers a fascinating glimpse into a bygone era of Eastern European rail travel.
