Euro Travel Skills: The Dolomites

For decades . . . literal decades, we have looked to Rick Steves for good quality travel content, usually targeted at we matures. We remember seeing him in the 1980’s in a small venue in Ohio, USA. Then, we attended a number of venues throughout the USA Pacific Northwest, his home. We’ve even bought his guide books at his shop there, too. We like his down-to-earth approach, where he shows us newbies the ropes. Our biggest and best find was when we stayed at the Hotel Du champs de Mar on the Rue Cler in Paris, recommended by Rick. (We’d still make an effort to stay there if and when we can. You can fall asleep with the Eifel tower.)

So, as as this may or may not be news to you, Rick has put nearly all of his videos online now for all to share and learn. This instalment is all about The Dolomites, a place you shouldn’t miss.

By watching the video, above, you’ll see why they were designated a UNESCO World Heritage site in 2009 for their exceptional natural beauty and geological significance. The Dolomites are often called the “Pale Mountains” due to their unique geological composition of dolomite rock (named after French geologist Déodat de Dolomieu).

They boast incredibly dramatic vertical forms: towering pinnacles, spires, sheer cliff faces that rise abruptly from gentler foothills, deep ravines, and extensive plateaus. These sculptural shapes are unlike any other mountain range in Europe, creating breathtaking panoramas.

This rock takes on extraordinary hues, particularly at sunrise and sunset, when it glows with shades of pink, orange, and purple – a phenomenon known as enrosadira. The stark, pale rock contrasts beautifully with the lush green meadows, dark forests, and the brilliant turquoise or emerald waters of alpine lakes (like Lago di Braies, Lago di Sorapis, Lago di Carezza). If you wanna rock, this is the place.
