We guess that we needn’t try to sell you on the world of travel. You’re on our site for that very purpose, and we love sharing our finds with you. As my partner and I get older, we can see that our days are numbered, but that doesn’t mean necessarily that we need to slow down. Far from it! So when an article from Wallpaper here showed up in our inbox today, our day just got even better. It’s about time she was given her due.

Who is she, you might ask? Eileen Gray (1878-1976) was an Irish architect, interior designer, and furniture designer who became a pioneering figure of the Modern Movement in architecture and design. Despite her immense talent and innovation, her work was largely overlooked for much of her career, only gaining widespread recognition late in her life and posthumously.
Readers of Matouring will know how much we love MCM, modern art and those Expeditionaries; people who participate in or are associated with expeditions, usually military, but in this case those who embark on journeys or “voyage” undertaken for a specific purpose, in this instance pushing the accepted mores of art. (the essential or characteristic customs and conventions of a community.)

Frank Lloyd Wright was certainly one. Other luminaries were Pablo Picasso, Henri Matisse, and Marcel Duchamp were key leaders. In furniture and design, Charles and Ray Eames, Eero Saarinen, George Nelson, and Arne Jacobsen are prominent names. Architects like Walter Gropius and Mies van der Rohe . The list goes on, as does the art itself. Want to read more about Eileen? Click here courtesy of Wallpaper.
If young people under 25 wander in to furniture stores and say “oooh and aaaa” they will likely have no idea what they’re drooling over and why. We guess it’s up to us oldies to set the record straight. E.1027
One thing to remember is that the house is periodically open for visitors. It’s known as E.1027. Read more about MCM and more in our library of MCM-related posts and topics. Click here.
