. . . Llego a Cueto, voy para Mayarí. Ever since we first heard the unforgettable sounds of the Buena Vista Social Club many decades ago (thank you Ry Cooder) we have been entranced with the song Chan Chan, one of the most memorable songs from the Buena Vista Social Club album, and the subsequent film.
Your editor was in my early twenties and, several decades later, finally managed to visit Cuba, recently. And I want to go back again. But this post is about Chan Chan, the place itself, far far away from the controlled chaos that is Havana.
The ancient city of Chan Chan, in Peru’s Moche Valley, was once the largest city in the Americas. For nearly 600 years, this metropolis of adobe buildings was the seat of the Chimú Kingdom (1000–1471 AD) and home to around 60,000 people.
Today, the ruins constitute one of the world’s most important archaeological sites. And, for those who are inclined, there are now guided tours to Chan Chan.
