We here at Matouring.com are egalitarian: we’re not always about yachts and expensive hotels. (Come to think about it, we rarely write about that.)
But, we do look for the unusual for you, our diverse and eclectic readers. In this case, we’re talking about the stunning coastline and local wineries Central Coast of California, but NOT the opulent Hearst Castle.
Instead, not too far away from the Hearst enclave, another unique and stopover-worthy edifice awaits you: Nitt Witt Ridge.
Often referred to as either the “poor man’s Hearst Castle” or the “anti-Hearst Castle,” the three-level house has seen better days. Arthur “Art” Harold Beal, an eccentric artist who was known locally as Captain Nitt Witt, bought the 2.5-acre lot on Hillcrest Drive for $500 in 1928. (Hearst, himself, was almost as ecentric as Nitt.)
Since 1981 it’s also a California Historical Landmark—which means it’s not going anywhere.
