When it comes to travel, some places have it made. Paris. Tokyo. Machu Pichu. You name it. And, of course, they’ve gained that place in the sun by being a destination. All of us can probably count them all on one hand. But what about places that kind of “sit in the back” and never really get their due. They’re all over the planet and we often don’t think about them until someone or something tweaks peoples interests. We have one here. Ohio, USA. With a population of nearly 11.9 million, Ohio is the seventh-most populous and tenth-most densely populated state. Its capital and most populous city is Columbus. Ring a bell? Probably not, but the state has its charms. But, in this case, charm is not the focus. Buried in the mounds is possibly some of the
most surprising and interesting history. There, The Octagon Mounds are part of the Newark Earthworks in Newark and Heath, Ohio, USA, which are the largest set of geometric earthen enclosures in the world. They were built by the Hopewell culture—the ancestors of contemporary American Indian peoples—between approximately 100 BCE and 400 CE. The Octagon Earthworks, which spans 50 acres, is a massive complex of walls that forms a near-perfect octagon connected by a passageway to an adjacent circle enclosure (the Observatory Circle). What is most interesting is that they have lain there, virtually unknown until recently. History fans will want to pay attention, as these are a genuine find.
