At the Lastminute, there is always Ryanair

This story is not exactly timely, but it is interesting – how the cogs of industry work.

For several years, the airline Ryanair had been battling, tooth and nail, with popular travel resource Lastminute.com about offering Ryanair flights on their platform.  Ryanair was having none of it.  The battle started in 2008 and was finally resolved at the end of 2020.

Ireland’s Ryanair offers some of the lowest price flights in Europe, but they don’t come without their own nutty idiosyncrasies.

  • A young British man legally changed his name to Adam West by deed poll, for just £103, rather than pay out the £220 he claimed Ryanair had quoted him to change the incorrect boarding pass. (Ryanair disputed this.)
  • Ryanair managed to annoy a whole country when one flight attendant referred to the Italian city of Bari as a ‘mafia‘ town.
  • In May 2012 one of the airline’s stewardesses fell out of a plane door onto the tarmac – in front of a full flight
  • In October 2011 a flight was grounded just 20 minutes into its journey to Riga, Latvia, because the tape holding on the windscreen of the Ryanair jet began to peel off.
