Ahh . . . mother Europe never fails to take your breath away. If the countries and towns themselves don’t woo you in, the countryside certainly will. Combine the magic elixir of both city and country, and you’re sold. Europe is divided into about fifty sovereign states, of which Russia is the largest and most populous, spanning 39% of the continent. We won’t get into the statistics here, because we have something far more beguiling.
We might be somewhat biased, but France has always been our destination of choice, primarily by its diversity. We can’t get enough. The cities are unforgettable, but it’s when you hop into a car and then wind your way into the smaller cities and the countryside that it truly shines. As you see in the video below, one of the true stars is Rocamadour.
Rocamadour is a commune in the Lot department in southwestern France. It lies in the former province of Quercy. The village itself clings to a sheer limestone cliff, offering spectacular views over the Alzou River valley. The dramatic setting is one of the most picturesque in France, with stone buildings seemingly stacked atop one another as they rise up the cliffside.
The village is a well-preserved example of medieval architecture. Walking through Rocamadour feels like stepping back in time, with its narrow, winding streets, ancient stone buildings, and historic gates. The 216 steps of the Grand Staircase, which pilgrims traditionally climbed on their knees, lead up to the religious sanctuaries. We’ve walked them. Take good shoes and plenty of water.
