China is a place that has the power to polarize people, and it doesn’t feel like it’s an homogenized blend. Some can’t wait to visit (like us.) Others will never go . . won’t even entertain the idea. China’s complex relationship with the international community is often characterized by a mix of admiration and apprehension, leading to a polarizing image.
Happily though, both types can live their lives in a blissful balance. Even if the home countries want to throw their toys out of the pram, there is always room for those of us who try not to choose sides. Chances are good that the “other” parties would very much like to visit our side of the planet, as well. Let’s make it happen.
Thankfully, at this place in time, the winds are blowing in our collective favour, as (where we live in Canada) travelers from Asia are more than welcome. Many stay for a while. Many stay for good. China’s rapid economic growth and increasing global influence have raised concerns among some nations about its intentions and potential impact on the international order. Also, the country’s human rights record, particularly its treatment of minority groups, political dissidents, and censorship practices, has been a source of criticism and controversy.
Certainly, China has certainly not been the only civilization that have faced these same problems. But, to the real point of this post, it’s up to us as thinking, caring humans to work hard to tip the scales and re-establish the world that we know we all can live in, together, in harmony. One way, of course, is to travel well.
