Ah, Mother Europe, the gift that keeps on giving. If you don’t sample all that Europe has to offer, then you’re not trying hard enough. And one of those must-sees are The Azores. If you need a primer, The Azores are an archipelago in the North Atlantic Ocean, and are known for their stunning natural beauty, unique landscapes, and rich culture.
The islands offer a variety of landscapes, including volcanic craters, lush forests, rugged coastlines, and beautiful beaches. Each island has its own unique scenery and attractions. And, being part of Portugal, getting there, and then getting around is easy. There’s much to do. But the volcanoes are the stars.
To some, they’re known as “Europe’s Hawaii” and that’s because they have a mild, subtropical climate, making them a pleasant destination year-round. And, one of the thrills is that the islands have several spectacular lava tubes formed by volcanic activity. The Gruta das Torres on Pico Island is the longest lava tube in the Azores and guided tours can be found. Spelunking is a popular activity, and the ability to do that is everywhere.
If you’re feeling hot, hot, hot, then visit one of the volcanos where you can cook with volcanic heat. On São Miguel Island, you can try the traditional dish “Cozido das Furnas,” a stew cooked underground using the natural heat from volcanic vents.
You can even see the cooking process and taste the unique flavors. Once you’ve had your fill of this sizzling location, you can always hop over to Lisbon or Morocco. What a great – and unique – holiday itinerary. It’s on our list.
