For some of you, this post is probably a non-starter: some people just love to take off on their own, see their sites, take their own time and be free – literally – to do what they want. It’s liberating in many ways, and just as scary in others. But, the world is a big connected organism now, and simply talking into your mobile phone and a downloaded translation tool (Google is excellent for that) sets you free. Solo travel pushes you out of your comfort zone. You learn to rely on yourself, make decisions independently, and navigate unfamiliar situations. This can enhance self-confidence, resilience, and adaptability. When traveling alone, you have the freedom to create your itinerary based solely on your interests and pace. You can change plans spontaneously without having to consult or accommodate others. Most importantly, you call the shots. Watch the video below, courtesy of National Geographic. It might open your eyes to get packing!
And, contrary to the misconception that solo travel means loneliness, it often facilitates more interactions with locals and other travelers. Without the familiarity of companions, you’re more likely to strike up conversations and form meaningful connections. We’ve made so many new and permanent friends as we’ve travelled. Try it some time.
