Don’t fret. Stories of the legendary, irreplaceable French baguette slowly disappearing are a bit premature. Apparently many French buyers are opting for the simpler, cheaper types of bread nowadays, and the eternal French staple, the baguette is falling from favour and also not appearing on shelves as frequently as before.
To any of us who love France, love French cuisine and – most of all – love the crunch of the first bite into a fresh baguette, this downward trend will not go down without a fight. That would be like Britain with no fish and chips, Italy without pasta and Germany without beer. Mon Dieu!!
Happily, some common sense prevails in this world and, in this case, the fight to save the baguette comes from a rather unusual source: UNESCO of all places. And they know a thing or two about saving precious treasures. It will be added to Unesco’s “intangible cultural heritage” list. Watch the BBC video, below to learn more . . . and learn what you can do. Quel soulagement!
