You can ride a giant mechanical elephant.

For some reason, some people think of France (and the French) as being a bit stiff and humourless. Of course, nothing could be further from the truth (Jacques Tati anyone?) And while the country takes some things very seriously – their cuisine and their history come to mind – France is as fun and diverse and joyful and playful as anywhere else.

So it may come as a surprise that you can ride a giant mechanical elephant. Les machines de l’île, in Nantes, are famous for their giant mechanical elephant. And, even better, tourists can just pay and ride it, belching steam and rocking back and forth to everyone’s glee.

Nantes[4] is the capital of the north-western French region of Pays de la Loire. That said, Nantes has strong historical connections with the adjoining region of Brittany, and is the historical capital of the region (though not its official capital since the days of Napoleon). Any way you look at it, Nantes should be on your list, especially since it is based in a truly interesting and varied part of France.

The ever curious Tom Scott discovered this and, as is his gift, has a video for you to enjoy. And we have options, below, for you to visit Nantes, ride the fantastical pachyderm . . . and enjoy even more in that wonderful city. Click here to discover and book your ride of a lifetime in Nantes,
