Armenian splendor

As a reader of our site, we assume that you love to discover new – and perhaps little-known – delights that the world holds. There are so many of them that it would take more than a few lifetimes to see them all. Not an easy mission, but definitely one worth persuing.

One area of the world that – to us anyway – is often overlooked is the Caucases. A beautiful part of the world in a number of ways, the region is blessed with an abundance of stunning constructions. In this case, we’re focusing on Armenia and the Monasteries of Haghpat and Sanahin. Designated UNESCO World Heritage buildings, the trek to experience these gorgeous works of architecture is not necessarily easy, but certainly worth the effort.

These two Byzantine monasteries in the Tumanian region from the period of prosperity during the Kiurikian dynasty (10th to 13th century) were important centres of learning. Sanahin was renown for its school of illuminators and calligraphers. The two monastic complexes represent the highest flowering of Armenian religious architecture, whose unique style developed from a blending of elements of Byzantine ecclesiastical architecture and the traditional vernacular architecture of the Caucasian region.
