We always get thrilled when we hear of another groundbreaking (literally and figuratively) archaeological excavation. Due to technology, they’re happening ever more frequently with sometimes stunning quality.
Situated in southeastern Turkey, the subterranean city of Matiate has recently been unearthed and is truly gasp-inducing in its size and quality. To give you an idea of size, the forty-nine rooms unearthed in the city comprise only three percent of its estimated total area. Unknown and umolested for the last nearly 2,000 years, archaologists believe that the cavernouse space was once the home of a stunning 70,000 people.
The city is the center of a centuries-old Hurrian town in Upper Mesopotamia. In its long history, the city of Midyat has been ruled The city has been ruled by Arameans, Persians, Greeks, Romans, Byzantines, and Ottomans one after another.
Settlement occured during the time of the Assyrian Empire, around 900 B.C.E.
