As the world gets larger, it also gets smaller, as it gets richer. Overall world income is increasing, with the resultant buying power of a newly richer population. People travel more, which can often change their outlook. Uprooting and landing somewhere else is no longer an activity only for the rich. The world is mobile.
As evidence of this, there are more than 8 million empty homes in rural Japan, and local governments are selling them for as little as $500 in a bid to lure residents.
