The first and most critical step was the end of the civil war and the establishment of a stable government. Following a peace accord in 1991, the UN Transitional Authority in Cambodia (UNTAC) helped to disarm factions and conduct democratic elections. While the political landscape remained complex, this period of relative peace created the necessary foundation for economic reconstruction. The Garment and Textile Industry: This was the initial workhorse of the Cambodian economy. By leveraging its low labor costs and favorable trade agreements with the United States and European Union, Cambodia became a major hub for clothing manufacturing. This industry created hundreds of thousands of jobs, provided a steady flow of export revenue, and attracted significant foreign direct investment (FDI) from countries like China and South Korea.
Finally, and best of all, the Tourism Boom hit: With peace, Cambodia was able to open its doors to the world, and tourists flocked to see the spectacular temples of Angkor Wat. The ancient temple complex is a UNESCO World Heritage site and has become the country’s biggest tourist draw. The influx of tourists created jobs in hospitality, transportation, and small businesses, rapidly becoming a leading source of foreign income.
