Dust. The Japanese service stations are leaving the rest of us in the dust. Wow! When we lived in the UK, we were rather impressed with our roadside services, especially with the ease of entering and exiting. We also appreciated how we could just step out side our car, stretch and sometimes walk inside to canteen to grab a sandwich or a coffee. Bish, bash bosh as we say. The USA and Canada are waaay behind. But let’s talk about the Japanese. Click here to learn more.

We watched a video (courtesy of Japanology Plus) on You tube about highway services. Yow! It’s like being on another planet where everything has been automagically catered to our every need. Japanese highways are famous for their service areas (SA) and parking areas (PA), which are far more than simple rest stops. They are meticulously maintained, multi-purpose complexes that offer a wide array of services, transforming a road trip into a unique cultural experience.
No crap over or under-cooked food there. Gourmet Food and Local Specialties: Unlike the standard fast-food options often found in other countries, Japanese SAs are renowned for their high-quality, regionally-themed restaurants and food courts. Many feature local delicacies exclusive to that prefecture, such as Hida beef dishes, fresh seafood from coastal regions, or specialty ramen. It’s a culinary journey in itself. Click here

Immaculate Restrooms and Facilities: Japanese rest stops are known for their exceptional cleanliness, with restrooms that are often considered a model for public facilities worldwide. They are equipped with advanced features like bidets and heated seats, as well as amenities for families, including private baby changing rooms and nursing corners. リニューアルした道の駅あいの土山.jpg Click here

Art abounds: some have so many activities (there is even at least one with a Ferris Wheel, you may never want to leave.) This is the way to do it. The Japanese have nailed it. Entertainment and Relaxation: Larger SAs often feel like mini-resorts. Many have natural hot spring baths (onsen), saunas, and footbaths for drivers to relax and rejuvenate. You can also find attractions like Ferris wheels, parks, and even themed areas that recreate historical settings or famous local landmarks. And did we mention fine dining? Click here
