Isn’t it a Pity?

George Harrison’s home in the London area was Friar Park, a neo-Gothic mansion in Henley-on-Thames, Oxfordshire, which he purchased in 1970 and lived in until his death. While not in central London, Henley is in the wider London area. He also lived in his childhood home at 12 Arnold Grove in Liverpool and later owned Bhaktivedanta Manor in Hertfordshire, which is now a Hare Krishna temple.

Why do the good ones die young? There are endless examples, but today we focus on one who’s life should not have been taken away so soon. This is about Beatle George Harrison and his tragic and early death. We will never see George alive again, but we can pass our thoughts and good wishes over the internet. We can also even slowly drive past his last residence, Friar Park.

It is a Victorianneo-Gothic mansion in Henley-on-Thames, England, construction began in 1889 and was completed in 1895. It was built for lawyer Sir Frank Crisp, and purchased in January 1970 by George. The site covers about 30 acres,[2][3] and features caves, grottoes, underground passages, a multitude of garden gnomes, and an Alpine rock garden with a scale model of the Matterhorn.

You can’t visit without an invitation, but you can admire the mansion from the outside. Please note that Friar Park is a private estate and is not open to the public for general visits. However, its historical and cultural importance makes it a significant landmark in Henley-on-Thames and the gates can be viewed from Gravel Hill.

Henley-on-Thames is a town and civil parish on the River Thames, in the South Oxfordshire district, in Oxfordshire, England, 9 miles northeast of Reading, 7 miles west of Maidenhead, 23 miles southeast of Oxford and 37 miles west of London, near the tripoint of Oxfordshire, Berkshire and Buckinghamshire.

To this day, George’s son Dani wife still inhabit the stately pile. You can usually visit by driving down the drive of Claremont Fan Court School. Be aware that it is still a functioning Academy.

If you want to use the UK’s superlative rail service, you can take a train to the vicinity of Fan Court School, as Claygate Railway Station is the nearest mainline station and is served by a school bus. The school’s late bus service, and the morning school bus, both stop at Claygate Railway Station.

Kinfauns (above) was a bungalow-style house, located at 16 Claremont Drive, Esher, Surrey, England, KT10 9LU, on the Claremont Estate. From 1964 to 1970 it was home of George Harrison.

George’s first real purchase, a bungalow in Esher, UK. The last time we were there, access to the school was still open, but not recommended to use as a tourist. Again, there are students there during school hours.
