Me Encanta Lappeenranta

Tip-toe through the tulips. We’re feeling a bit frisky for this post, hence the title. We suppose that it could remain the play on words in the title, and we’re sure that most of you know what Encanta means, given that it is all over Disney products. But, we’re not here to promote that, nor to even discus it. Your editor’s better half suggest that we do a post about Lappeenranta. If you’re thinking that it’s a place in Spain, it’s not. It’s in Europe, but is somewhat of an enigma (much like the Fins themselves.) There – I’ve let the cat out of the bag about this post.

Church of the Protection of the Goddess of Lappeenranta

Lappeenranta is a city in Finland and the regional capital of South Karelia. It is located in the southeastern interior of the country and in the Finnish Lakeland. The population of Lappeenranta is approximately 73,000, while the sub-region has a population of approximately 88,000. Wikipedia That’s comfortably small as well as being comfortably enticing. Also, given that is is uncomfortably close to Russia, that adds a whole new dimension as you walk around the town, never knowing if you’ve crossed the wrong border.

But, what makes Lappeenranta a must see in Finland that it is a Nordic welfare state that aims to be carbon neutral by 2035. It’s also the happiest country in the world. Around 75% of its surface is covered with forests, and it has the world’s biggest archipelago, as well as Europe’s largest lake district and last untamed wilderness, Lapland.

We have Finnish friends who are always kind, love a good joke and know how to relax. Wonderful.
