As the old joke goes, where would we be without GPS? (the correct answer is up a creek without a paddle.) So, join us here as we discuss something tangible, awe inspiring (literally) and an effort that permits us to park the “there’s no getting around getting around” platitude that we like to proclaim so much. This is high-tech low-tech that we should all know about, bend down on our knees and thank those who came before us to do all of the hard stuff; The stuff of iron and steel. Today we skip Vancouver and Toronto and feature Welland.

Wikipedia says “The Welland Canal is a ship canal in Ontario, Canada, and part of the St. Lawrence Seaway and Great Lakes Waterway. The canal traverses the Niagara Peninsula between Port Weller on Lake Ontario, and Port Colborne on Lake Erie, and was erected because the Niagara River—the only natural waterway connecting the lakes—was unnavigable due to Niagara Falls. The Welland Canal enables ships to ascend and descend the Niagara Escarpment, and has followed four different routes since it opened.
Happily, the Welland Canal is open to visitors and offers several ways to experience it. You can explore the canal through the Welland Canal Parkway Trail, visit the St. Catharines Museum and Welland Canals Centre, or view ships navigating the locks at locations like Lock 7 Viewing Complex in Thorold or Lock 3 in St. Catharines. *Some content courtesy of Wikipedia.

To fly there, the nearest airport to the Welland Canal is Niagara District Airport (YCM). It’s located in the heart of the Niagara region, near the canal and major transportation routes. Alternatively, Niagara Central Dorothy Rungeling Airport (CNQ3), also known as Welland / Niagara Central Airport, is another option closer to the Welland Canal, specifically in Pelham, Welland, Port Colborne, and Wainfleet.
For those seeking larger commercial airports with more frequent flights, Buffalo Niagara International Airport (BUF) in New York, USA, and Toronto Pearson International Airport (YYZ) are also options, though they require longer travel times to reach the canal.
