Hanoi.ed?

Far from it! Do you consider yourself well-travelled, a citizen of the world, a trekker of distinction and quality? If so, you’re in the right place. This is definitely a location that should bubble up near the top of your to-do list. Hanoi. Hard to believe, but it’s still a bit of a question mark for so many potential fans. Why is that, especially when Hanoi is a city brimming with history, culture, and a vibrant energy?

While the Old Quarter, Hoan Kiem Lake, and Ho Chi Minh Mausoleum are must-sees, there are many unique and unusual experiences that delve deeper into the city’s soul. The big must see is the Experience Hanoi’s “Train Street” (Carefully!) You’ve seen it as it glided past rows of bare knees lined up along the benches. We’re sure that AMTRAK wishes it had this.

Carrying on with this, the narrow residential alley has homes and cafes built mere inches from an active railway line. When the train passes (usually twice a day, but check schedules locally), it’s an exhilarating and surreal experience as locals swiftly pull back their tables and chairs. While its popularity led to some closures, parts of it are still accessible, often with cafes operating right on the tracks.

(Always exercise extreme caution and respect local guidelines and warnings.) Our affiliate partners, G Adventures, have quite the variety of things to do while you’re there (separate of the train) with their Hanoi Day Tour: Hao Lu and Tam Coc (Ninh Binh) (full day.)

Go back in time on this day tour to the Ninh Binh Providence and explore Hoa Lu, the ancient capital of Vietnam, surrounded by limestone mountains and unblemished green fields. Visit the Dinh and Le dynasty temples, palaces, and monuments. Discover the interesting history of the mesmerizing Nhat Tru Pagoda where a princess was sentenced to nunnery and lost her life down a well. Top it all off with a sampan boat ride through three caves! Have your camera ready because these are sights you’ll never want to forget.
